Donations, sponsors flood in for hospital revamp
THE dreary exterior of Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital will get a facelift, after generous donors contributed R94 000 for paint.
On Monday, the painting of the iconic 60-year-old hospital will begin. Children’s Hospital Trust ambassador Greg Bertish has rallied the community, drawing donations from sponsors and supporters.
Bertish – a big wave surfer and former SA stand up paddle board and SA Surf Lifesaving champion – holds the hospital close to his heart.
“The painting will take at least 10 weeks and involves more intricacies and processes I could have imagined. However, we’ve had incredible supporters and sponsors which have allowed this dream to become possible.”
The 46-year-old dad, who has undergone two open-heart surgeries, says he can relate to the need for a little optimism and inspiration when it comes to recovering from a life-threatening stay in hospital.
After embarking on a passionate public plea in October, Bertish began working closely with the Western Cape government: health and Red Cross Children’s Hospital management to launch the project in just a few months.
Children’s Hospital Trust chief executive Louise Driver said: “We are overwhelmed by the unbelievable generosity of sponsors as well as donors.”
Sponsors include Alpinist Safety Consultants, Bee Painters, Cancer Dojo, Kansai Plascon, UPAT and Vertical Logic.
