On Wednesday 13 June, The Little Optimist held an evening at Suikerbossie for both adults and children alike, which included a talk by Greg Bertish, The Little Optimist Movie and an auction to raise funds for The Little Optimist Trust and Bright Start.

The Little Optimist Boat, in real life!

Bright Start is an educational non-profit organisation committed to providing a brighter future for children, youth and adults from low-income families in historically impoverished communities of Cape Town, through access to better educational opportunities. The Bright Start mentorship programme gives on-going support outside the classroom by addressing social, cultural and physical needs as well as parental empowerment, therefore ensuring the child and their family reach their maximum potential.

A successful sale of our books!

The evening was the biggest yet for The Little Optimist, with 250 tickets sold out, and another 50 tickets sold at the door. Guests were treated to Suikerbossie’ s gourmet burgers and enjoyed a wonderful evening, listening to Greg’s inspiring story and watching the moving Little Optimist film.

It was a tricky evening for Greg, who is usually accustomed to addressing either adults or children. At Suikerbossie, Greg found himself in front of a huge audience ranging from two years old to adults, half of which were children. Greg did a fantastic job of getting his story and message across, with all ages being moved by The Little Optimist’s cause and wanting to contribute – so much so that it was difficult to stop the children bidding at the auction!

Greg Auctioning Off Some Amazing Prizes

The evening ended up with a very rowdy auction, courtesy of the very enthusiastic smaller members of the audience trying to bid for the items too, with great bids on some wonderful prizes donated by sponsors, details below.

The evening was a resounding success, with R 26 000 raised for The Little Optimist Trust and Bright Start, and 35 The Little Optimist books donated to children in need.
